Archbishop of Canterbury calls for action on social care

However, a government spokesperson said it has prioritised social care in the Autumn Statement making up to £7.5bn over the next two years available to support adult social care and discharge – the biggest funding increase in history.

“This will allow more people to access high quality care and help address some of the challenges in the sector – including waiting lists, low fee rates, and workforce pressures,” the spokesperson said.

“We’re also promoting careers in care by launching our annual domestic recruitment campaign and investing £15mn to increase international recruitment of carers.

“The government remains committed to delivering adult social care charging reform and supporting those who need it, which is why we are giving local authorities additional time to prepare and providing more funding to help with their immediate pressures.”

The Archbishop’s message ties in to a report to be published on January 24 called Care and Support Reimagined.

It has been commissioned by the Archbishops of Canterbury and York and will offer a “hopeful vision of our society”, Welby said.

“One where no one is held back, over-looked or treated as a burden –  where families and unpaid carers get support too.”
