Mr Sands, who is a barrister and professor at University College London, deftly crosses from genre to genre, weaving together the past and the present to gradually bring into focus the life of Wächter and his family.
The result is a tale that highlights how evil can exist in the most unremarkable places, and how easy it is to become deluded into justifying it.
