He adds: "There has been a trend of phased retirement, where individuals move down to a two or three-day working week. This provides benefit all round; the firm retains knowledgeable and experienced staff, while the individual can wind down from work without a sudden change to lifestyle.

"Divorce rates are increasing amongst the over 65, often referred to as 'silver splitters'. This is attributed to couples now spending more time together, which causes additional friction or realisation that they have little in common. A phased retirement reduces this lifestyle shock."
