Legal & General has appointed James Shattock as managing director for its UK protection business.

Shattock, who is currently commercial director for retail protection, will take on the role in December, joining the retail executive leadership team.

He will enter the role with over 25 years experience in the insurance industry across both the direct and reinsurance markets.

He joined Legal & General three years ago from UNUM UK where he was chief underwriting officer.

Shattock said: “I strongly believe in the value we bring to our customers and their families, and I’m really excited about the opportunity to continue the great work already undertaken by my predecessor.

“The protection market is going through a lot of change, and this provides a great opportunity for us to broaden our customer support to keep more people covered.

“I hope to use my experience in the insurance industry to help deliver Legal & General’s strategy across both retail and group protection.”

The appointment follows Steve Griffiths’ retirement announcement after a 17-year career at Legal & General, having led the retail protection and group protection businesses over the past six years.

Under Griffiths’ leadership, Legal & General has paid out “record amounts” in retail protection claims and has introduced several changes to its product range to extend support to a broader audience and help keep more people covered.

Commercial director

The role of commercial director will be taken by Pippa Keefe upon Shattock’s appointment.

Keefe, who was previously Legal & General Retail Protection’s business development director, will join the retail protection leadership team.

She joined Legal & General in 2023, bringing over 13 years’ experience in the protection market, working with insurers, re-insurers, and direct distributors.

Both roles will be “crucial” in leading the strategy and execution of Legal & General’s protection proposition, pricing, underwriting and claims, as well as overseeing relationships with key partners and intermediaries.

Keefe added: “I’m delighted to be joining James' leadership team as commercial director and building on the excellent work already underway as we navigate the unique challenges of today’s protection market.

“I believe in the strength and quality of our people and know that we are well positioned for continued successful growth as we move forwards.”
