Former Artemis global equities manager Simon Edelsten has joined Goshawk, the asset management start-up founded by his former colleague Alex Illingworth and backed by City veteran Chris Mills.
Edelsten and Illingworth ran the Global Select fund and the Mid Wynd investment trust before Edelsten left Artemis at the end of 2023.
Illingworth then also left the firm very soon after.
Illingworth subsequently linked up with Harwood Capital, the investment management firm headed by Mills, and subsequently acquired the asset management business of Vermeer Partners, comprising a global equity fund and an ETF which invests in a combination of equity and bonds.
Edelsten’s non compete arrangements stopped him from joining Goshawk until this week.
He joins as chair of the investment committee, but says the role is full time and he will be actively engaged in managing the money.
Edelsten, Illingworth and Mills are the three founding partners of the business.
Edelsten said: “Alex wanted to get the band back together, and I couldn’t resist. I’ve known Tim and James for years – they’re outstanding managers and, from what I’ve seen, Charlie is on track to become one of the best of the next generation.
"We all have a very similar approach to managing money, and the chance to run a modern active ETF together as well just made this too good an opportunity to miss.”
Another industry veteran at Goshawk is Tim Gregory, whose previous roles include founding PSigma Asset Management and head of UK retail funds at Gartmore.
The Vermeer Global Equity fund will be renamed Goshawk Global, and be run by Illingworth, Edelsten, Gregory, James Roswell and Charlie Fricker, the latter trio having run it at Vermeer.
Rowsell is a former chief executive of Cantor Fitzgerald in Europe.
FT Adviser understands there are no specific plans to launch further products, with the focus being on growing the equity fund and the ETF, which is effectively a balanced fund.
The Global Equity fund has assets of £70mn, having grown by £20mn since being acquired.
